Law Software Firm move to SaaS to save time and money for end users

Date: February 3rd, 2012

Edinburgh-based software firm, HotDocs, has unveiled a new Software as a Service (SaaS) application aimed at lawyers in both the UK and US. The new software is designed to automate time consuming activities, therefore cutting costs and saving time for law firms.

The main use of the software would be in client interviews - rather than talking face to face with a lawyer, the SaaS application will allow clients to enter information from a home computer then send it to the appropriate department.

Leonard DuCharme, chief strategy officer at HotDocs, is positive about the opportunities the SaaS model will offer smaller law firms.

"Until now, small law offices have been at a technological disadvantage," said DuCharme. "HotDocs Server, which up until now has been necessary for web-based deployment of HotDocs templates, is simply outside small-firm budgets.

"HotDocs Document Services, in contrast, requires virtually no up-front costs and is priced so that even the smallest law offices can take advantage of its powerful features."

Due to the often sensitive nature of the data lawyers work with, HotDocs recognised security is a priority for law firms when using the new SaaS.

"Cloud customers remain responsible as the 'data controller' under data protection law for any personal data of individuals they place within the cloud," he told Cloud Pro.

"This includes ensuring that their cloud providers have adequate organisational and technical measures in place to keep personal data secure but also considering carefully the location of their prospective cloud service provider."
